Decatur is DeKalb County’s seat and a walkable business center

Decatur, incorporated in 1823, is the seat of DeKalb County. Its business center is the courthouse square around the 1898 Historic DeKalb Courthouse, now home to the DeKalb History Center, with offices such as One West Court Square and 315 West Ponce de Leon Avenue ringing the shops and restaurants. MARTA’s Blue Line stops under the square, Avondale and East Lake stations also serve the city, and the square reopened in 2026 after an $8.5 million first-phase renovation.

The largest employers include DeKalb County government, Emory’s health systems, City Schools of Decatur and Agnes Scott College, the women’s liberal arts college founded in 1889 a short walk from the square. Emory Decatur Hospital anchors the North Decatur Road medical corridor, Columbia Theological Seminary sits on the south side of town, and Emory University and the CDC are about 2 miles to the west. Several Decatur neighborhoods are local historic districts, so signs here have to suit the street as well as the brand.

    Sign permits in Decatur

Inside city limits, sign permits come from the City of Decatur Planning and Zoning staff, and both permanent and temporary signs need a permit under the Unified Development Ordinance. A sign in one of Decatur’s local historic districts, such as MAK, Ponce de Leon Court or Old Decatur, or on a local landmark like the Old Courthouse, also needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission. Many addresses with a Decatur mailing address are in unincorporated DeKalb County, which has its own sign permit, so we confirm the jurisdiction first and file as your authorized agent.

What clients say about working with us

Every High Stakes Creative review on Google is five stars. A few in the clients’ own words.

    ★★★★★

We had a fantastic experience working with Matt Matthews and his team on a custom company van wrap for Affinity Home Lending. From design to production to installation, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. They went above and beyond, and insured we were 100% happy with the final product.

    ★★★★★

These guys have wrapped and lettered our vehicles and they have created signage for our office space. We could not be happier with their creativity and workmanship. Everything they do is a work of art and a sound investment.

Tyrus G.Google review · Vehicle lettering and office signage
    ★★★★★

We hired Matt and High Stakes on a referral from a friend at another sign company (that’s saying a LOT!) to produce a new lighted building sign for our comic & toy shop expansion. They were great to work with, highly communicative, helped us figure out a version of the sign that would fit within our budget. We ALREADY have new customers into the store because they have SEEN our new sign!

    Decatur questions we hear

Who issues sign permits in Decatur?

Inside city limits, the City of Decatur Planning and Zoning staff, and a permit is required for both permanent and temporary signs. Many addresses with a Decatur mailing address, including stretches of North Decatur Road and Clairmont Road, are in unincorporated DeKalb County, which issues its own sign permits. We confirm the jurisdiction first and file as your authorized agent.

Our building is in a Decatur historic district. Can we still get a new sign?

Yes, with an extra step. Signs in local historic districts such as MAK, Ponce de Leon Court or Old Decatur, or on a local landmark like the Old Courthouse, need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission as well as the sign permit. We design signs that suit the building and prepare the drawings the commission needs.

How do you handle installs around the square, where parking is tight?

We schedule early or after hours, use the downtown decks for crew vehicles and keep install windows short. Downtown street meters have a two-hour limit and loading zones are enforced, so we plan deliveries and lift access with the property ahead of time.

Do you work with schools and colleges in Decatur?

Yes. We produce wall graphics, wayfinding, donor walls and athletic branding for campuses, and we schedule installs around classes, holidays and summer break so students and staff are not disrupted.

Can you roll out a rebrand from our Decatur office to other locations?

Yes. We survey each site, produce one sign schedule listing every sign type and material by location, and pilot the rollout before moving to regional waves. Because strategy, design, production and installation stay under one roof, every location uses the same files, colors and installation standards.
